Wired.com Adopts Grails for Rapid Project Delivery
SAN MATEO, Calif.-(Business Wire)-March 10, 2009 - SpringSource, the leader in enterprise Java, and the company behind Groovy and Grails technologies, today announced that Wired.com is using Grails to develop the Product Reviews section of its website for more rapid and flexible development processes. The use of Grails on Wired.com is an expansion of Spring technologies, as the main Wired.com website is a Spring MVC application.
Wired.com, the online arm of Wired Magazine, provides technology news and commentary to more than 12 million viewers. The company recently introduced a standalone section of the website called Product Reviews in an effort to provide an interactive reader experience. Wired.com also introduced a complementary iPhone application, allowing users to research gadgets, watch videos and read Gadget Lab blog posts on-the-go. Since Wired.com gets millions of page views, the web developers were looking for a superior application like Grails with advanced performance capabilities and quick development cycles.
“Performance was one of our greatest considerations,” explains Paul Fisher manager of technology for Wired.com and author of Spring Persistence — A Running Start. “The performance we have seen from Grails has been extremely encouraging, especially against other rapid development frameworks. In my experience Grails runs much faster.”
Grails made it easy for Wired.com to develop versions of the Product Reviews website quickly and efficiently. Grails is simpler than other development options, which has enabled Wired.com to streamline a process that previously involved redundant work among developers. The Product Reviews section has grown significantly since the first release, in terms of features and functionality. SpringSource released the latest version of Grails today. The new version, Grails 1.1, simplifies and accelerates web application development enabling developers to focus on delivering new applications and capabilities to customers at a much quicker rate than complex and bloated application infrastructure alternatives. The company also released Groovy 1.6, a powerful and very popular dynamic language for the Java Virtual Machine (JVM) that provides seamless integration with Java.
“Grails has become a foundation in development technology, providing a clear and simple workflow,” says Graeme Rocher, head of Grails development for SpringSource. “SpringSource is pleased that Wired.com uses both Spring and Grails technologies to enhance their website.”
Spring, Groovy and Grails are three of the most popular application infrastructure solutions in the world. Groovy is one of the most popular alternative languages for the Java Virtual Machine (JVM), with up to 70,000 downloads per month. Adoption of Grails has also soared, with downloads racing from 7,000 to 70,000 per month in the past year. In November, 2008, SpringSource acquired G2One Inc., the company behind the popular Groovy and Grails technologies and now offers global enterprise support for developers and IT operations that utilize Groovy and Grails applications.
On March 19, 2009, SpringSource is hosting a webinar, “Building Twitter with Grails in 40 Minutes.” The webinar, lead by Graeme Rocher, will teach participants how to construct a basic Grails project with Spring-based domain objects and how to incorporate messaging and persistence into your Grails application.
